The Alchemist: A Must Read for Aspirants by Ahona

Reading books is gracious and it is to me the best way to spend my time when I am doing nothing. It is considered a very good habit because it leads to the all-round development of your brain and personality. I am not quite a raven in reading or a bookworm (certainly not a bibliophile). Lately I have been trying to keep my touch with books and I am constantly getting attached to it. A few days back a certain book caught my eye. Being a ‘read before you think’ type of girl I decided to read it all instantly. It is a ‘book to remember’ and known by most bookworms. It is an inspirational masterpiece by Paulo Coelho. It is called “The Alchemist”.

About “The Alchemist”

The book was written by Brazilian author Paulo Coelho back in 1988. At first it was written and published in Portuguese. After getting a large amount of recognition and inspiring a lot of people it has been translated to more than 70 languages. It became an international bestseller in no time. The book is comparatively short having around 170 pages only. The theme of the book is about finding one’s destiny or purpose in life.

Plot

The story is based on a Shepherd boy from Spain named Santiago. He is the protagonist of the story. He keeps getting the same dream about marvelous treasures that are hidden in the great Pyramids of Egypt. At the first place he did not take this seriously and avoided it like nothing happened. But when he kept getting the same dream again and again it started to give him concern. He went to a gypsy woman who knew how to decipher the words of a dream and after knowing a little about those dreams he found out that it was not only a mere dream, it was his destiny. Then he met the old king who offered him magic stones and advice. After that he embarks on a journey to follow his dream. The shepherd boy crosses the Mediterranean and Sahara to find his treasures in Egypt and also solve his personal sophisticated equation which is his purpose in life. The book details his journey and the various encounters that he experiences when following his dream to reach his destiny. Throughout the journey, Santiago meets many new people and a lot of difficulty which at the end of the day helped him to learn and grow the entire way. Did he find the treasures in the great Pyramids of Egypt? The book will answer itself.

Magical Quotes

Paulo Coelho enriched the book with inspirational quotes for aspirants. Here’s some of them.

● “Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself. And that no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams, because every second of the search is a second’s encounter with God and with eternity.”

● “One is loved because one is loved. No reason is needed for loving.”

● “It’s the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting.”

● “There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure.”

● “Each day is a different one, each day brings a miracle of its own. It’s just a matter of paying attention to this miracle.”

Conclusion

If you want me to review “The Alchemist” in one word, I will say fantastic. The usage of perfect words in perfect places made the book unimpeachable to read. The book is filled up with inspiration, motivation, mystery and so on. It is said that “All men of action are dreamers”. This quote fits in the role of Santiago the protagonist of the story. Finally, I must say that “The Alchemist” is a book which will enlighten anybody’s bookshelf.
